This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
With everything that’s been happening in the wider world over the past few month, this couplet has been echoing in my head for a while. It’s a couplet from TS Elliot’s ‘The Hollow Men’ and it’s quite possibly one of the most quoted lines by a 20th century poet.
It’s haunting and beautiful in it’s simplicity.
In years to come, when our stories are almost spent and people ask us about the lost Summer of 2020, when the World was a sometimes scary and unrecognisable place. When the ordinary ebb and flow was disturbed and irrevocably altered, where plans were writ in sand and it sometimes seemed that Tomorrow would never come, how many of us will look back and think … that was the way the world ended, not with a bang, but a whimper?
