Change

Sometimes change is fun. Sometimes it can be scary.

Either way, nothing stays the same and change is someting is we all have to face.

Being a bit of a control freak, change is not always something that is easy for me. I like the safety of my routine and the comfort that comes with that routine: like sliding into a favourite pair of comfortable jeans, but life has been a whirlwind of change and it’s time to share some of these with yous all.

After over 3 and a half years as Pixie the Pirate at Beaten Path Radio, I have hung up my Pirate hat and gone legit. I’ll be forever greatful for everything I learned there, and for the oppurtunity to learn to do something that I truly love with all my heart — namely, sharing music with yous all.

The good news is that I haven’t given up broadcasting — far from it.

I’ve just gone through a bit of an evolution.

So, Welcome to Pixie 2.0 — same old giggles, brand new home and a shiny new show. Well. A trio of shows, truth be told. I have my own prime time Mixtape style show, every Friday Night, 22:00 til Midnight, I co-host the flagship chart show every Sunday from 17:00 til 20:00, and I have an hour of throwbacks every Monday at 10:00.

Sometimes change is fun. Sometimes it can be super scary. And sometimes, if you’re really lucky, you’ll think you’re falling, only to find that you’ve learnt how to fly.

The First Rule of Film Club …

The First Rule of Film Club is that we do not stop talking about Film Club. And that’s just about all the rules with have at the moment.

Film Club is an idea that I’ve been playing about with for about 18 months or so. As well as being a music junkie, I am a mad film fanatic, so any time I get to hang with my peeps and share an epic movie is a happy time for me!!

So, the big question is How is it going to work?

I’m thinking of running it once a month – I’ll run a poll across socials and the most popular choice will be selected. I’ll upload the film for yous to all download, and on screening day, we’ll all pile into chat and watch it simultaneously. If you are late to the screening – no big deal, you can catch up or watch whenever you have the time and yous can leave all your thoughts and comments on the blog post that relates to that film.

If you’re a film fan, and this sounds like your brand of fun, you need to join The Booty Club – because I am going to be emailing the link out. Joining The Booty Club is Free and super easy – just drop an email to pixiethesparklypirate@gmail.com simples!!

I’ve been sent some suggestions for the first film and to allow you to make an informed decision, here are some trailers for you – make sure to vote on the poll at the end!

Cruel Intentions
The Cell
The Fall
Mulholland Drive

Pieces of Me – Day 14

Happy Valentine’s Day, my Loves – we’ve made it to the end of this particular mixtape, and this final track is a treasure from my teens.

MY ALL – MARIAH CAREY

I was a lovesick pixie, in a long distance relationship with a boy living on the other side of the city, when this one came out. I had it on cassette and played it over and over and over again. It is soaked in nostalgia for me and takes me back to the echo of that wistful yearning and the first fush of falling in love.

Pieces of Me – Day 13

WICKED GAME – CHRIS ISAAK

I’ll be completely honest here – I have no idea why I am obsessed with this song, I just am. I have so many covers of it, but the original still remains my favourite. It’s that bluesy, dreamy feel to the lyrics and that sense of falling helplessly into something that you know you’re going to regret, but not caring, because sometimes, just sometimes, the things that hurt are the things that you need.

Pieces of Me – Day 12

This is another one that was played a lot whilst I was growing up – My Sister and I used to do a lot of singing together, and this was one that we could rock a harmony on. And we did. All over the neighbourhood. And since we would usualy get sweets for this, I guess you could call it our first paying gig!

Pieces of Me – Day 11

Another one that always gets me right in the feels …

The lyrics are all about unconditionally being there for someone, be it a lover or a friend. It’s a beautiful sentiment and a beautiful song, and thats why it’s on this list!

Pieces of Me – Day 10

Well, well, well. I made it all the way to Day 10 before pulling a track from the ultra moody Pixie wants to Play mixtape!

To me this is a song about chaos and control. It’s raw, with an industrial edge and a barely concealed bite of menace, and it’s a little more subtle then listening to Nine Inch Nails when I want to scratch that squirmy musical itch.

Best enjoyed in the dark! xo

Pieces of Me – Day 9

I can’t really have a mix tape of music that hits me in the feels, without having at least one reference to Taylor Swift. Love her or loathe her, the woman has an impressive array of music at her fingertips, and with all the lyrical lushness at my fingertips, the one that haunts me is this

In a track full of lyrical magic (“You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath”, “you call me up to break me like a promise. So causally cruel in the name of being honest”, “Time won’t fly, its like I’m paralysed by it. I’d like to be my old self again, but I’m still tying to find it” “They say ‘all’s well that ends well’ but I’m in a new hell everytime you double-cross my mind”), this is the one that hit me like an arrow.
