The First Rule of Film Club …

The First Rule of Film Club is that we do not stop talking about Film Club. And that’s just about all the rules with have at the moment.

Film Club is an idea that I’ve been playing about with for about 18 months or so. As well as being a music junkie, I am a mad film fanatic, so any time I get to hang with my peeps and share an epic movie is a happy time for me!!

So, the big question is How is it going to work?

I’m thinking of running it once a month – I’ll run a poll across socials and the most popular choice will be selected. I’ll upload the film for yous to all download, and on screening day, we’ll all pile into chat and watch it simultaneously. If you are late to the screening – no big deal, you can catch up or watch whenever you have the time and yous can leave all your thoughts and comments on the blog post that relates to that film.

If you’re a film fan, and this sounds like your brand of fun, you need to join The Booty Club – because I am going to be emailing the link out. Joining The Booty Club is Free and super easy – just drop an email to pixiethesparklypirate@gmail.com simples!!

I’ve been sent some suggestions for the first film and to allow you to make an informed decision, here are some trailers for you – make sure to vote on the poll at the end!

Cruel Intentions
The Cell
The Fall
Mulholland Drive

Pieces of Me – Day 14

Happy Valentine’s Day, my Loves – we’ve made it to the end of this particular mixtape, and this final track is a treasure from my teens.

MY ALL – MARIAH CAREY

I was a lovesick pixie, in a long distance relationship with a boy living on the other side of the city, when this one came out. I had it on cassette and played it over and over and over again. It is soaked in nostalgia for me and takes me back to the echo of that wistful yearning and the first fush of falling in love.

Pieces of Me – Day 12

This is another one that was played a lot whilst I was growing up – My Sister and I used to do a lot of singing together, and this was one that we could rock a harmony on. And we did. All over the neighbourhood. And since we would usualy get sweets for this, I guess you could call it our first paying gig!

Pieces of Me – Day 10

Well, well, well. I made it all the way to Day 10 before pulling a track from the ultra moody Pixie wants to Play mixtape!

To me this is a song about chaos and control. It’s raw, with an industrial edge and a barely concealed bite of menace, and it’s a little more subtle then listening to Nine Inch Nails when I want to scratch that squirmy musical itch.

Best enjoyed in the dark! xo

Pieces of Me – Day 9

I can’t really have a mix tape of music that hits me in the feels, without having at least one reference to Taylor Swift. Love her or loathe her, the woman has an impressive array of music at her fingertips, and with all the lyrical lushness at my fingertips, the one that haunts me is this

In a track full of lyrical magic (“You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath”, “you call me up to break me like a promise. So causally cruel in the name of being honest”, “Time won’t fly, its like I’m paralysed by it. I’d like to be my old self again, but I’m still tying to find it” “They say ‘all’s well that ends well’ but I’m in a new hell everytime you double-cross my mind”), this is the one that hit me like an arrow.

Pieces of Me – Day 8

We’re just over the halfway part, so it’s all downhill from here, my freaky darlings!

Now bear with me, this may venture into gushing fangirl territory, because this entry on my mixtape is from one of my major musical idols – John Paul White.

The third song on the album Beulah, this was the track that made me fall head first in musical love with this artist.

I obviously have a thing for dark and depressing songs – broken dreams, dark fairytales, unhappy endings – with this song chronicling the bitter break up of a relationship, the chorus claiming “I never really loved you anyway”, and Mr White expresses dark and depressing so beautifully … le sigh!!

It’s also one of those magical, melancholy songs that’s a million times better live. However, I have the tendency to get a little hormonal and tear up every time I hear him do this one live too!

Enjoy this jewel of a song, my loves!

Pieces of Me – Day 7

Music is one of the ways that I escape myself. When lost in a song, I can forget everything – my stress and anxieties, the niggling worry, the voice that drips poison into my ear. All these things are drowned out when I find the perfect song. This is one of those, which is fitting, because it’s a song about escape. But it has a dreamy, sweet and hopeful element to it which I find just beautifully haunting and soothing.

So sit back, press play and be swept away with this one.

Pieces of Me – Day 6

Day 6 brings us to Lacuna Coil’s Spellbound.

With their blend of metal growls, heavy beats and beautiful melodic lines, this is a band that I fangirl over on a regular basis – trying to pick my favourite Lacuna Coil Song is an almost impossible task, but the lyrics of Spellbound imprinted on me the first time I heard it and have been with me ever since. To me, this is a song about obsession and addiction and the internal struggle to overcome these.

It also holds a special place on my mixtape because it was the first song I ever played on air and the second track on my first show with Beaten Path.

Hope you enjoy it too!

Pieces of Me – Day 5

Day 5 and we’re on to a slightly less angsty track – Huzzah!!

This track was my gateway in to the technicolour world of Synthwave and my introduction to the brilliant music of Gunship. Straight after my first listen, I was onto YouTube and Spotify and down not just rabbit holes, but entire warrens!

Gunship crafts musical masterpieces, loaded with dark beats and infectious melodies., full of beautiful lyrics and dripping with nostalgia.

If you’ve ever managed to listen to one of my shows, you’ll know a little about my obsession with all things Gunship. I love them, pure and simple, and we all know that true love lasts a life time! Plus, they’re Brits. Which immediately gives them a million extra cool points. They are currently working on a new album, and you know what that means … TOUR!! so I am praying to all the Gods that they make it up to Glasgow and I get tickets!
